Head of an Online Whisky Auction Business

A fine & rare opportunity to lead a talented team for a key player in the online auctioning of collectable and high value whiskies, other spirits and occasionally  fine wines/champagne.

Our client is part of a larger successful group that lead the way in spirits in the UK. You will need to be a very well connected spirits professional with excellent understanding of the online auction process. They are looking for a strategically minded person with the ambition to grow the business and lead a team of nine people.

An understanding of the Private Client (HNW/UHNW) space is also important to their future growth.

Full Time Role – London Area

(Min 3 days per week in office)

Base Salary Range £65k – £85k

Lead the division and  create the strategy in line with business growth and deliver on results with successful auctions.  Be the expert on sourcing, authentication and evaluation of fine spirits and wines.  Build on existing and new client relationships in a creative and dynamic way.


Position Summary

Working with an amazing range of old and rare bottles of whisky, fine spirits and cultivating relationships with our customers around the world, you will be leading the  team to source fine, rare and desirable whiskies and other spirits for sale through the auction. In this highly competitive environment it will be critical to success that the role holder is able to think strategically but is also hands-on and agile in adapting to changing circumstances. Flexible working hours may be required on occasion in order to meet the necessary demands of our client base.


Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the coordination and running of the auctions through the auction manager and team.
  • Meet net profit and sales targets and contribute to strategic long-term business development
  • Lead the auction team in a collaborative way
  • Prospect and cultivate new business through research & networking across collectors
  • Create opportunities for a unique client experience
  • Maintain an exceptionally high level of client service
  • Work collaboratively  with our other business functions to deliver an excellent client experience
  • Maintain high levels of expertise and professionalism at all times
  • Review current processes with a view to find opportunities for improvement and efficiencies, keeping up with digital/technological advancements
  • Continually develop and grow understanding of spirit categories to add value to our customer base through expert knowledge and trusted advice.
  • Provide expert authentication and evaluation
  • Strict adherence to our company rules on corporate governance and compliance
  • Leading a team of 9 people


Ideal Experience & Competencies

  • Proven track record of working with the auction process, procedures and systems
  • Extensive skills in sourcing, authentication, and valuation
  • A thorough knowledge of the world of whisky and other spirits
  • Highly developed networking and client relationship management skills
  • Strong track record in building a client base
  • Business acumen and budget management
  • Excellent team leadership skills, with the desire to work with the team
  • Ability to work well under pressure, and have a flexible approach to a wide range of tasks
  • Effective organisational skills and appreciation of tight deadlines
  • Understanding corporate governance and compliance
