At Vinokelly we get a regular flow of potential candidates who are keen to move into the wonderful world of drinks (alcohol) in the UK. This isn’t always straightforward despite these candidates having great experience, often within FMCG.
Our clients mostly come to us with roles for which they want experienced candidates within the world of drinks. For example – if you are selling to supermarket buyers, someone who is currently selling to the same group of supermarket buyers is very attractive. If you are in FMCG but selling to a completely different section of the supermarket buying team, then it might take some time to establish relationships, get listings and see tangible results.
The world of drinks is more highly regulated than some other FMCG sectors furthermore there is a product knowledge barrier between drinks and other FMCG sectors, some parts of the drinks industry such as wine can be difficult to get up to speed quickly.
However since Covid the trend to welcome candidates from outside the industry has continued. These candidates will bring new ideas, a fresh look and often an ease and different experience with technology. The easiest place for these candidates to find new roles are companies that have very strong brands and an established flow of existing business to the UK supermarkets or to the national pub and catering groups.
